info:

three tracks - nine tails, clipper and weevils - are from a radio session for reverb fm which we recorded in april two thousand and four.. lawrence buckley, on the advice of simon kaye, put us in ground zero for a day with james stringfellow, who was very open to how we wanted to record, and we did four songs (the other one was a version of backwards which was really new at the time) in a day

we went back and did the rest over a couple of days that summer, then there's one song (how long) from the granary from autumn two thousand and three (same sort of time as firewood/loudmouth)

incidentally:

nine tails was a kind of turning point song for us.. we first played it out at the t.wells forum november the first two thousand and two,
the same show where we did our never-repeated cover of leave the capitol

a-b debuted at the freebutt with lapsus linguae august two thousand and three, leon was there. like most of the songs on the record it
really took on its shape when we toured with cat on form in february the next year

again and clipper were in the first sets we ever played as a proper band back in early two thousand and one. clipper was the first song
we ever played together at practise. that was a good day actually

how long hardly ever got played out and you certainly won't be hearing us do it any time soon

the eleventh day first got played at, if memory serves, the twelve bar sometime in late two thousand and three. we did it better on
resonance fm than we did on the record. but that's how it goes

paper dart is the oldest song on the record. actually it's the oldest charlottefield song but don't you know it's rude to ask about age

weevils first appeared in the set on the same night as nine tails... we've got an actual drawing of this song somewhere. the take on the record is probably the best one we ever did and we should of left the song there but we just can't help ourselves sometimes

some long overdue thanks (in no particular order):

the jonson family for asking us for a record and then patiently waiting two years while we scrapped a couple of versions

james dennet for playing bass for the first three and a half years of the band and for being pretty much responsible for there being a
charlottefield in the first place

cat on form for taking us on tour which was brilliant

chris gymer, steve adam and paul morgan for driving us around, lending us stuff and being patient with us

pete and barney - above and beyond

chris baker who mastered the u.k version and is a good man

james stringfellow who still has not been paid for recording it
